Bad Essen Elementary School
Markus Reher, Architect
For the new construction of the elementary school and gymnasium in Bad Essen, Markus Reher developed a clearly structured complex that integrates educational functions, physical activity, and communal use within a precisely organized architectural framework. The design responds to the requirements of a contemporary educational facility and creates an open, child-friendly learning environment.
The buildings are arranged around a central schoolyard, which serves as a connecting element between instruction, recreation, and physical activity. Structures of varying character give the complex its form and create distinct spaces for the individual functions. Transparent ground-floor areas facilitate orientation and strengthen the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The open spaces are an integral part of the concept. In addition to traditional break areas, diverse gathering spaces are being created that enrich the school day and offer a variety of uses. The scale of the architecture is carefully tailored to the children’s perspective, creating a pleasant and manageable environment.
The visualization focuses on the entrance area and the schoolyard as the central hub for arrival and interaction. It illustrates the interplay between architecture, open space, and usage, conveying the atmosphere of a vibrant learning environment. Lighting, scale, and everyday usage scenarios allow the spatial qualities of the design to be experienced even during the competition process.
